Unlike traditional breed organizations, the KNPV was established to develop exceptional working dogs capable of serving in demanding police and military roles. Selection was based on performance rather than appearance, producing dogs with remarkable intelligence, athleticism, courage, and an unwavering desire to work.
Over generations, Dutch Shepherds and Belgian Malinois were occasionally crossed to preserve working ability, improve genetic diversity, and maintain the intense drives required for police, military, and protection work.
