Basic Dog Training – Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions About Basic Training

What is included in your Basic Training program?

Our Basic Training program focuses on everyday obedience and control. Dogs learn core commands such as Sit, Down, Place, Here/Come, Heel, and Kennel. We also work on leash manners, impulse control, and calm behavior in real-world environments.

What type of dogs is this program designed for?

Basic Training is ideal for family dogs, working-breed puppies, and young adults who need good manners, structure, and reliable obedience at home, in public, and around distractions. High-drive hunting and working dogs also benefit from this foundation.

How old should my dog be to start Basic Training?

Most dogs start Basic Training between five and nine months of age, once they are fully vaccinated and have the maturity to handle structured work. Older dogs can also enroll, and we adjust the program to each dog’s age and temperament.

Program Length, Structure & Methods

How long does the Basic Training program last?

Program length is typically several weeks to a few months, depending on your dog’s starting level and your goals. We focus on reliable results, not just rushing through a checklist, and we will recommend a time frame after evaluating your dog.

Is this a board-and-train program or do I bring my dog to lessons?

Our core Basic Training is run as a board-and-train program. Your dog lives with us during training so we can work them multiple times per day, around different environments and distractions. We also offer owner-handler lessons so you learn how to maintain the training at home.

What training methods and tools do you use?

We use balanced, reward-based methods that build respect and clarity for the dog. Food rewards, toys, praise, and structured corrections are used as needed to create a reliable, confident dog. Training tools are introduced fairly and we always put the dog’s well-being first.

Health Requirements, Drop-Off & Daily Life

What vaccinations or health requirements do you have?

For the safety of all dogs at our facility, we require proof of current core vaccinations (such as rabies, distemper, and parvo), flea and tick prevention, and overall good health. We will review specific requirements with you before your start date.

What should I bring when I drop my dog off for training?

We recommend bringing your dog’s regular food, current vaccination records, and any medications they may need. You can also send a crate, favorite toy, or blanket from home to help your dog settle in more comfortably.

Will my dog be worked around other dogs and distractions?

Yes. Part of Basic Training includes learning to focus around other dogs, kennel noise, vehicles, and everyday distractions. We want obedience that holds up in the real world, not just in a quiet training room.

Results, Follow-Up & Support

What kind of results should I expect from Basic Training?

By the end of the program, most dogs can walk politely on leash, respond to their core commands, and display much better manners at home and in public. Your consistency after training is what locks these results in long-term.

Do you show me how to handle my dog before they come home?

Yes. We schedule a detailed go-home session to walk you through all of your dog’s commands, handling techniques, and management at home. We want you to feel confident and in control the moment your dog leaves the kennel.

Do you offer refresher training or follow-up support?

We are happy to offer follow-up lessons, refresher stays, or additional programs as your dog advances. If questions come up after training, you can always reach out for guidance and support.
